Artemis Women In Action Film Festival Has Partnered with Kaylene Peoples of Bella Composers to Include Music in the 5th Edition

The Artemis Women In Action Film Festival (AWIAFF) has opened submissions for women composers, songwriters, and women led bands.  The fast growing festival started in 2015 and has since extended honors to Melissa McCarthy, Tom Cruise, Michelle Rodriguez, and others. During the AWIAFF Fourth Edition, Bella Composers featured two women: Scorewriter Sarah Wallin Huff and songwriter/Music Supervisor Nancy J. Lilley. Now female musicians will be given the opportunity to showcase their talents at the festival this spring.

“I’ve been aware of music in film for years and it just makes sense to include music in the festival. Strip music out of any movie and you’ll have a lesser film.” –Melanie Wise, Artemis Founder

Statistically throughout history, women musicians have not received the warm welcome their male counterparts have gotten.  Many female composers have been cloaked under their husbands as was the case of Fanny Mendelssohn (1805-1847) Fanny co-composed many of Felix Mendelssohn’s compositions. The same goes for Clara Schumann, the wife of Robert Schumann. A movie was made about Maria Anna “Nannerl,” (Mozart’s Sister) who lived in the shadows of her brother Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and was a prodigy in her own right.  Women led bands have come to the defeating realization that many never receive the exposure, accolades, or income bracket they deserve. The world stage has blatantly left out women. Female musicians who have gotten exposure have bravely spoken out about this lopsided injustice.

Evidenced by the blaring shutout of women winning awards at the 60th Annual Grammy Awards, held in January 2018, only 18 awards went out to women or women-led bands. Recording Academy president Neil Portnow stated after the ceremony that it was the responsibility of women to “step up” if they wanted to achieve success in the music industry. In response to Neil Portnow’s statement, Pink stated, “Women in music don’t need to “step up.” Women have been stepping up since the beginning of time. Stepping up, and also stepping aside . . . When we celebrate and honor the talent and accomplishments of women, and how much women step up every year, against all odds, we show the next generation of women and girls and boys and men what it means to be equal.”

Bella Composers (bellacomposers.org), founded by musician/composer Kaylene Peoples, is an organization that was created to give women composers more opportunities and exposure in film and television. Peoples is curating the musical submissions in partnership with Artemis.

Female solo artists, and female led bands can submit songs or theme songs; composers can submit film scores or musical compositions. Submit music of any genre. Compositions/scores must be accompanied by sheet music and will be judged solely upon music. Awards will be presented in several categories, including live performances selected from musical submissions. Submissions are available through Artemis, FilmFreeway, and Withoutabox. Visit Artemisfilmfestival.com (http://www.artemisfilmfestival.com/submissions) for more details. Entries close January 15, 2019.
